A mid layer will typically be thicker, with a greater emphasis on insulation, than a base layer which is more focused towards moisture wicking and comfort during periods of activity.

A mid layer is one of the most versatile layering options on your expedition kit list. A good mid layer can be worn in changeable conditions to offer a light layer of insulation in mild temperatures or underneath an insulated jacket or hard shell to provide maximum warmth in extreme cold.
