Belts

A running belt carries the essentials, phone, keys, gels or a small hydration flask, without the bounce and movement of a bag or pockets. It's built for stability during dynamic activity, sitting close to the body so it doesn't shift or chafe over distance. For runners, it solves a simple problem: carrying gear without carrying weight that gets in the way.

Wear a running belt snug against the lower back or hips, tight enough to stay in place without restricting breathing or stride. Test the fit with a short jog first: a properly worn belt should feel almost unnoticeable once you're moving.

A tactical belt is built for load-bearing, rigid enough to support pouches, holsters or heavier kit without shifting under weight. A running belt is built for the opposite: minimal bulk, stretch and stability during continuous movement. One prioritises capacity and integration with gear systems, the other prioritises comfort and low profile over distance.

Position the belt so that it won’t dig into your spine or hip bone. Keep the load balanced rather than concentrated on one side, and re-check tension after the first mile, since belts often loosen as you warm up. Comfort over distance depends on getting this right before you settle into pace.

Measure at the point you'll actually wear the belt, that's your waist for a running belt, rather than relying on trouser size. Account for layering: a belt worn over a base layer in summer needs a different fit to one worn over insulated layers in winter. When between sizes, check the specific product's sizing guidance rather than guessing.

It depends on the load and the distance. A running belt suits short to mid distance runs where you're carrying a phone, keys and maybe a gel, without the coverage or setup complexity of a vest. A vest distributes weight better for longer runs or hydration-heavy loads. For most everyday runs, a belt offers comfort and simplicity a vest doesn't need to justify.
