Technical trousers are built for performance under real conditions rather than general everyday wear, using durable, often stretch-engineered fabric, reinforced panels at high-wear points like the knees and seat, and articulated construction that allows a full range of movement. Functional details, gusseted crotches, adjustable waistbands, multiple pockets, are chosen for a specific purpose, not decoration. The distinction from a standard pair of trousers comes down to what they're engineered to withstand: abrasion, weather, sustained movement, repeated wear in demanding environments.

Prioritise durability first: reinforced panels at the knees and seat resist abrasion from rock, scree and repeated kneeling or crouching. Weather resistance matters next, a water-repellent or windproof finish holds up against unpredictable outdoor conditions without needing a separate shell layer for most days. Articulated construction and stretch fabric allow full movement on technical terrain, while a gusseted crotch prevents the seam blowouts that come with high-mobility use. Finally, check breathability: a trouser that traps heat during high-output movement becomes the discomfort it was meant to prevent.

It depends on the priority. For stretch and freedom of movement, a four-way stretch weave built into articulated panels performs best on technical terrain. For raw durability against abrasion, a ripstop construction like NYCO Ripstop or a heavyweight cotton holds up to years of hard use. For fast-drying comfort in wet or humid conditions, a quick-dry weave such as Pertex® Equilibrium wicks moisture and dries quickly rather than holding water weight against the skin. Fit for movement first. There should be room to bend, crouch and stride without the fabric pulling tight across the knee or seat, which is why articulated seams and stretch panels matter more on trousers than on casual wear. The waist should sit securely without a belt, and the leg should sit close enough not to snag on undergrowth or gear, but not so tight it restricts circulation on a long day out. If you can't crouch down comfortably in the changing room, they won't work on the hill either.

Wash on a cold or lukewarm cycle using a technical, non-detergent cleaner rather than standard fabric softener, which coats performance fabrics and reduces breathability and water repellency over time. Turn the trousers inside out to protect any coatings or laminates, and air dry rather than tumble dry on high heat. If the DWR finish starts letting water soak in rather than bead off, a low, gentle tumble dry cycle can reactivate it; check the care label for the specific fabric before doing this.

The best pair depends on what you're doing in them. For technical hiking or expedition use, look for four-way stretch fabric with articulated seams at the knee, a DWR finish to shed light rain, and reinforced panels at high-wear points like the knees and cuffs. For everyday utility wear that moves between outdoor and urban environments, a durable ripstop such as NYCO earns its place through toughness rather than technical stretch. There's no single "best", only the right build for the conditions.

When mountaineering, opt for long trousers rather than shorts as these will provide additional protection from the elements and terrain. Certain pairs, like our Charge Trousers, even feature boot hooks to keep out the worst of the weather, allowing you to climb in comfort.

With the exception of our waterproof Aigis Trousers, all of our trousers are water resistant through the use of weatherproof fabrics and/or a Durable Water Repellant treatment (DWR).

Our trousers can be worn with additional base layer leggings underneath if required in extreme cold, for this we recommend the regular fit of our Charge Trousers.
