Fabric needs to withstand repeated contact with undergrowth, rock and rough ground that would degrade standard road kit. Storage becomes essential: gels, a phone, a key. Longer inseams suit runners who prefer added coverage in colder conditions or on routes with heavy undergrowth. Our Force Trail Running 4" Shorts feature a built in brief liner. Built-in liners provide support and eliminate the chafe risk that comes from skin-on-fabric contact over long distances. For most trail runners, a lined short removes the need for a separate compression layer and simplifies your kit. Unlined shorts suit runners who prefer to wear their own compression shorts underneath, particularly in colder conditions. If you're covering serious distance on technical terrain, a liner is the lower-risk choice.

Chafing is a fabric and fit problem, not an inevitability. Choose shorts with flatlock or minimal seam construction in high-contact areas: inner thighs, waistband edges and liner hems. Moisture-wicking fabrics reduce the wet friction that accelerates chafing on long efforts. Integrated liners remove direct skin contact on the inner thigh. Fit should be snug enough to prevent fabric shifting, but not so tight it creates pressure points. On long efforts, address friction points before they become problems. If none of this works, you can buy and apply anti-chafing cream before taking to the start line on race day.

Machine wash on a cool cycle (30°C or below) and avoid fabric softeners, which coat moisture-wicking fibres and reduce their ability to draw sweat away. Turn shorts inside out before washing to protect the outer fabric. Do not tumble dry: heat degrades the elastic fibres in the waistband and liner, shortening the life of the fit. Air dry flat or hanging. Treat your kit well and it performs consistently for longer.
