Thru-hiking is a term of American origin gradually gaining traction here in the UK and Europe. It means a continuous, end to end journey of a long distance hiking trail. This might take place over a couple of days, weeks or even months.
What is Thru-Hiking?
There are no clearly defined parameters for what constitutes a “thru-hike” but it is commonly understood that thru-hiking covers a considerable amount of distance and time. This isn’t a day out in the lakes nor a weekend camping holiday in the hills, a thru-hike is a much greater commitment of time and effort and for some this brings much greater reward than a conventional hike. Those of us in the UK might consider the length of the South West Coast Path a prime example of a thru-hike, or perhaps even completing Hadrian’s wall in one continuous effort. Domestic and european outdoorspeople alike might class the famous pilgrimage of “Camino de Santiago” a thru-hike with routes crossing Southern France and Spain.
Where can I thru-hike in the UK?
As we’ve identified, “thru-hiking” as a term was coined in the United States with wide-ranging trails offering a greater opportunity for long distance travel. However, there are many long distance routes in the United Kingdom that might also classify under a domestic understanding of “thru-hiking”. We’ve already mentioned the South West Coast Path, a 630 mile route through Devon, Cornwall and Dorset that can take up to 6 weeks to walk in a continuous effort. Other examples include Scotland’s West Highland Way, the Pennine Way or even walking the length of Offa’s Dyke, the historic boundary between England and Wales.
What kit do I need for thru-hiking?
You’d be forgiven for thinking that your thru-hiking kit list would just be the same as your normal hiking gear but there’s a subtle difference. For a long distance, long duration, self supported (i.e. carrying your own equipment) journey you will want clothing that prioritises both weight and breathability. It goes without saying that lighter layers are preferred with a lower pack weight helping you move more quickly and reduce the risk of injury. Likewise, with many days (if not weeks) on the trail breathable layers that minimise sweat buildup will keep your kit fresher for longer and make for a more comfortable experience in the long run. Merino wool options like our Oryon 72hr Merino T-Shirt are perfect for this. These considerations aside, your kit should reflect the season and environment you’re thru-hiking in - think insulated layers in winter like our Ithax Jacket and a Vanguard waterproof jacket in case of rain. As with all hiking, correct footwear is essential so pack your trusty hiking boots (and if you can spare the room some comfortable outdoor slippers for respite at the end of the day).
Clothing aside, pack weight should also be a consideration for your equipment. Depending on whether you are staying in accommodation or camping along the way, a lightweight camping set up with tent or bivvy bag is advisable. If travelling in warmer months you’ll be able to get away with a 2 or 3 season sleeping bag but you’ll likely have to pass up the luxuries and pack a lightweight inflatable pillow and sleeping mat. Think about your access to fresh water along the route and make sure you carry enough water bottles to see you through from pit stop to pit stop. The same goes for fuel on the move, if refreshment stops are few and far between, consider packing light but energy dense snacks such as trail mix or sugary sweets to keep you going between meals. When it comes to meals, opt for boil in a bag camping food that is both easy to pack and easy to cook with a portable camping stove.
Thru-hiking in Europe
Europe is home to some fantastic thru-hiking opportunities with vast mountain ranges, open countryside and coastal trails. A pinnacle amongst these would be the Tour du Mont Blanc offering the best of alpine scenery for those who aren’t afraid of elevation. If you’re looking for a real technical challenge, Corsica’s GR20 is notorious for its difficulty (matched only by the reward of its views). The Italian Dolomites provide a quintessential European experience with the scope for hut to hut trails where you can bed down in a traditional “refugio” for the night. Those of you who have ticked off much of what Britain has to offer in terms of hiking might consider European shores for your next big challenge.
